Patches & Layers

Every block is a stack of patches. Each patch holds a shape and a fill. The order matters: patches on top cover patches below, just like layering fabric on a design wall.

Adding a patch

To add a patch, open the Shapes tab in the right panel and tap a shape. The new patch appears at the top of the stack, covering anything below it. You can also duplicate an existing patch from its context menu.

Selecting patches

There are two ways to select a patch:

  • Tap on the canvas — Tap directly on a patch to select it. If patches overlap, the topmost visible patch is selected.
  • Tap in the layers list — Tap a layer row to select that patch, even if it's partially or fully hidden on the canvas.

Reordering layers

Drag a patch row up or down to change its position in the stack. Moving a patch up brings it forward (covers more). Moving it down sends it back (gets covered by more).

The canvas updates in real time as you drag, so you can see exactly how the reorder affects your design before releasing.

The paint model in practice

Think of it like layering applique on a background fabric. You place a triangle over a square and the triangle covers the square wherever they overlap. You don't need to cut the square to fit around the triangle.

BloqLoft works the same way. Overlap is expected. Place shapes, stack them, reorder them, and the geometry engine calculates the exact visible area of each patch. When you export templates, every piece comes out with precise cut lines. No manual trimming needed.

Tip: Every block starts with a background patch, a full-square shape at the bottom of the stack. This ensures there are no gaps in your design. You can change its fill, but think twice before deleting it.
