Baby Blocks Grid
The baby blocks grid creates the classic tumbling blocks pattern: three diamonds arranged to create a 3D cube illusion. It's one of the most recognizable quilt designs in the tradition, and BloqLoft handles all the geometry for you.
How it works
Each "block" in the grid is actually three diamond-shaped pieces arranged to form a cube face: a top, a left side, and a right side. When you assign three values of fabric (light, medium, and dark), the 3D illusion appears. The grid tiles these cubes across the quilt surface.
The dimensional effect comes entirely from fabric value (lightness and darkness). Choosing fabrics with strong value contrast makes the cubes pop. Low contrast creates a flatter, more abstract pattern.
When to use it
- Classic tumbling blocks or baby blocks quilts
- Designs that play with the illusion of depth and dimension
- Scrap quilts organized by light, medium, and dark value
Grid settings
Set the number of cubes across and down. The three-diamond arrangement is built into the grid structure. Borders can frame the composition.
Design considerations
The 3D effect depends on consistent value placement. Keep your lightest fabrics on one face (typically the top), medium on another (left), and darkest on the third (right). Fabric pattern and color matter less than value for maintaining the illusion. A useful test: squint at your fabric choices. If you can clearly distinguish three values, the cubes will read.
