Clipped On-Point Grid

The clipped on-point grid gives you the diamond rotation of on-point blocks, trimmed to a clean rectangular edge. No setting triangles, no ragged edges.

How it works

Like the traditional on-point grid, blocks are rotated 45 degrees. The difference is at the edges: instead of filling corners and sides with setting triangles, the layout clips to a rectangle. Blocks along the edges are simply cropped.

This creates a cleaner visual edge while keeping the dynamic diagonal energy of on-point blocks. It's a modern look that works especially well for wall hangings and smaller quilts where you want the on-point effect without the visual weight of setting triangles.

When to use it

  • You want the diagonal energy of on-point blocks with a clean rectangular border
  • Wall hangings or table runners where setting triangles would overwhelm the design
  • Modern quilts that favor geometric precision over traditional framing

Grid settings

Adjust the number of blocks across and down, sashing width (if used), and borders. The clip boundary is calculated automatically based on your grid dimensions.

Yardage considerations

Clipped on-point layouts generally require less fabric than traditional on-point because there are no setting triangles. Edge blocks use less fabric than full blocks since they're cropped.
